I’m John Abernathy, a tobacco expert with over two decades of experience in the industry. I currently reside in the beautiful rolling hills of Virginia, United States, a place steeped in tobacco tradition and history. It’s where I’ve found the inspiration for my work and passion.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some of the leading companies in the tobacco world. My journey began at the Philip Morris International, where I first dipped my toes in the ocean of tobacco science. My curiosity led me to British American Tobacco, where I honed my skills in understanding the intricate nuances of various tobacco blends.
Throughout my career, I’ve had some incredible experiences. From overseeing the cultivation of tobacco plants, and understanding their myriad of species, to my adventures in the factories where the magic of cigar-making unfolds, it’s been a fascinating ride. Perhaps the most interesting part of my job has been my travels, sourcing high-quality tobacco from the different corners of the world.
I’ve been fortunate enough to receive several awards during my tenure in the industry. In 2020, I was presented with the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Tobacco Science Research Conference for my contributions to the field. And in 2022, the International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers Association awarded me the “Tobacco Expert of the Year.” I see these awards as a recognition of my dedication to the industry and as a motivation to keep pushing the boundaries.
When I’m not neck-deep in tobacco leaves, you can find me pursuing my other hobbies. I’m an avid bird watcher and hiker. There’s something about the quiet tranquillity of nature that perfectly complements the slow pleasure of a good cigar. I also have a soft spot for blues music and can strum a decent tune on my trusty old guitar.
Being in the tobacco industry is more than just a job to me – it’s a lifestyle. It’s a constant journey of discovery, unraveling the secrets behind the leaf, appreciating its deep cultural history, and respecting the craft that turns it into a product loved by many.
